Described by some as a glorified bathroom scale, this peripheral is so amazing revolutionary as the Wii Remote was when first launched, and since the Wii Remote that Microsoft and Sony will play ball until they try to bring the same functionality to their consoles. When the excitement of Wii Fit is off, will the Wii Balance Board which is remembered as the game that took the next level.

But there is a whole story behind this seemingly simple piece of kit, which took months to develop and went through many prototypes of various shapes and sizes, before becoming thin on the white board that was at home in living rooms worldwide.

A scale for Shigeru Miyamoto

Before you can understand the thinking behind the balance board you need to take a step back to understand the original vision that led to the need for such a peripheral. That view was because Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's Senior Managing Director.

Since the force driving force behind games like Pikmin and Nintendogs, Shigeru developed a reputation for creating games based on their personal hobbies. Wii Fit is no exception since the original concept for the game of his own interest in weight and recording their weight on a daily basis. This led to the beginning of a project called "Health Pack "which later became Wii Fit.

From the beginning, the challenge was how to take something as simple as weighing, something he enjoyed, but many see as mundane and turn it into an activity that could be fun for the whole family. This proved a major challenge for the development team at a time, was about to be scrapped.

Two scales are better than one

At this stage the team began to realize that I could be more than one scale, but actually a game interface.

Circles, Squares and octagons

Once the general concept of the balance board has decided and would have four sensors, work began to find out the optimal way and the size of the Board along with how he communicated with the Wii console. This proved to be a long process of trial and error and a constant battle between the cost and ease of use.

Home Prototypes of the Board were circular, square, and then, even at a time octagonal, but it soon became clear that these forms were impractical, especially to consider exercises like push-ups. Again, the solution came from Miyamoto, who realized that the natural position of a person before the training was to be with feet shoulder width on what is decided that the Board be more rectangular.

The second major challenge is deciding how the balance board that communicate with the Wii console.
